bezpieczeństwo w górach

Safety in the mountains

Lack of crowds, pleasant temperatures, and sparkling colored peaks – autumn is the perfect time for mountain hiking. However, regardless of the time of year, this great way of spending free time in nature requires a proper preparation. What safety rules should you follow to spend unforgettable moments among picturesque views without risking your life and health? What to remember before setting out on a trail? We suggest!

Choose the right route

The basic principle of safety in the mountains is to choose an appropriate route – matched to our physical condition and experience in the mountains. We should consider the time given on tourist maps and differences in elevation or the presence of huts and shelters where we can stop in case of bad weather. The time of the trip may also be prolonged by various difficulties, such as wet stones or icy fragments. When planning a trip with children, let’s assume that crossing a given trail will take us about twice as long as the information signs.

Check the weather

An essential element of safety in the mountains is the prevailing weather. Therefore, before setting out on a trail, it is necessary to check the meteorological conditions. Not only temperature is essential for us to – while in summer we should pay attention to information about thunderstorms, and in winter – to information about avalanches, in autumn we need to know about possible rainfall and strength of the wind. Let’s also remember that autumn days, although often dry and sunny, are getting shorter, so it’s worth deciding on a trail from which we will return before nightfall, along with which it gets freezing at altitude. Finally, don’t forget that the weather in the mountains changes really fast – so it’s good to have your phone with you and monitor the current warnings if possible.

Completing your mountain outfit

A safe trip to the mountains also requires clothing appropriately tailored to the prevailing and forecast weather conditions. It is recommended to wear multiple clothing layers. They should protect us both from chilling due to low temperatures and penetrating wind but also from overheating and sweating. Breathable thermoactive underwear is an obligatory element of autumn trekking. A fleece, lightweight synthetic down, or a softshell providing excellent protection against the wind will work well as another layer – a warming one. It is worth having another jacket or fleece in your backpack, which may come in handy during stops or on the summit. You will also need a well-made rain jacket with a membrane. Put on stretchy, windproof and waterproof pants. You should also wear solid, waterproof trekking shoes with a tread and high, ankle-stabilizing upper, which will minimize the risk of injuries on the trail.

Pack a mountain backpack

Before going out on the trail, we should carefully pack our mountain backpack. It is essential to find in it:

– map,

– phone with emergency numbers,

– charged power bank,

– headlamp,

– extra clothing,

– a supply of water,

– food,

– UV sunscreen,

– First aid kit,

– Crampons for shoes – these will ensure comfort and safety, especially on slippery, icy surfaces,

– Stuffed booties – fabric boot gaiters protect your pants and shoes from getting wet and snow from behind the upper part.

Inform your hosts about the outing

Do not forget to inform your hosts about the planned trip, route and time of return. In case of unexpected events, this will ensure quick assistance.

Any time of year in the mountains can be safe as long as you follow the basic rules. We recommend Szczyrk and our Przystanek Góry to everyone looking for a picturesque area for active rest on Beskid trails. You are welcome!

5 reasons to visit the Beskids in autumn

The end of the summer season does not have to mean goodbye to the mountains. On the contrary – staying after the season is an excellent alternative to wandering along the trails crowded during vacations and a chance to enjoy the stunning landscapes. Here are a few reasons to plan an active holiday in the Beskids in autumn!

  • Mountains are the most beautiful in autumn

Mountains fascinate at any time of the year. In the winter, the snow-capped peaks shine beautifully in white. In the summer, the fantastic weather encourages hiking. According to many, however, it is the autumn when the mountains look most beautiful and are most conducive to covering less and more demanding trails. The golden Polish autumn is a guarantee of breathtaking views – the multicoloured slopes dotted with red and yellow trees are impressive.

  • The mountains are peaceful in autumn

The popularity of mountain hiking is growing every year. During the vacation season, you can meet real crowds on the trails. In such conditions, it is difficult to have an entirely comfortable rest. Therefore, for mountain lovers who seek peace and quiet, we recommend staying in the Beskid Mountains in the autumn months. In September, the local trails become somewhat emptier, allowing you to get closer to nature and take advantage of its soothing effects.

  • It’s easier to find accommodation in the mountains in autumn

The large number of tourists visiting the mountains in the summer makes it difficult to find accommodation during the peak season without proper advance notice. However, when mountain resorts become more intimate in autumn, you can easily book a place in a guesthouse or hotel – and often at a lower price than in summer. Many facilities also prepare special autumn package stays for their guests, which are worth taking advantage of.

  • Autumn hiking strengthens the body

There is no need to convince anyone of the beneficial effects of mountain hiking on our bodies. Especially in autumn, hiking the trails is a great way to oxygenate your body, improve the work of the respiratory and circulatory systems, and while providing relaxation – improve your mental condition. A stay in the Beskid Mountains is also an excellent opportunity to strengthen the immune system before the onset of winter.

  • Temperatures in autumn encourage us to go out on the trail

Last but not least – the weather. Summer hiking in the mountains is a real challenge for many people. However, the heat is getting less intense with the arrival of September. Temperatures are getting friendlier, weather conditions are stable, and at the same time, the days are still long enough and pleasantly sunny enough to plan an active day on the trail.

When to plan your autumn vacation in the mountains?

Do you not know when the best time to plan autumn holidays in the mountains is? In our opinion, the period from the second half of September through October to the beginning of November is the best time to visit the Beskids bathed in the autumn sun and enjoy the view of colourful trees without crowds on the trails. At that time there is also the best chance for perfect weather – of course, as before any trip, you should check its long-term forecast.

Where to stay during an autumn stay in the Beskydy?

Looking for the best autumn hiking stop in the mountains? We invite you to the picturesque Beskidy Mountains, and precisely to cosy Szczyrk, where our Przystanek Góry is located. We provide our guests with comfortable rest and a delicious breakfast to start the day. trasy enduro w Szczyrku

Enduro routes in Szczyrk and its surroundings

Szczyrk, picturesquely located in the Silesian Beskid between Klimczok and Skrzycze, in winter turns into a true ski eldorado. The largest and most modern ski resort in Poland, where ski lovers can enjoy dozens of kilometres of runs, does not become empty at the end of the season. When the snow melts, cyclists take the place of skiers and snowboarders. Seekers of thrills will find in Szczyrk many routes providing a shot of adrenaline. Here are the most interesting ones, which are worth testing during your stay at the Przystanek Góry!

Szczyrk Enduro Trails

In 2019, the unique Szczyrk Enduro Trails by TREK project will be launched in the ski resort, attracting winter sports enthusiasts for years. It is unique in the region and in the country complex of one-way cycling paths of singletrack type. The avid cyclists will have at their disposal specially profiled routes – with an appropriate slope, a place to slow down, and bumps to make it easier to overcome tight turns. Furthermore, the whole route has been designed away from pedestrian traffic, with safety and fun for enduro fans in mind.

There are several routes of varying difficulty and a total length of 13 km:

  1. Route 1 – Hip HopA Air designed for beginners and intermediate cyclists. Length – 2300 m, average gradient of 8.4% and a drop of 193 m.
  2. Route 2 – Otik designed for intermediate and advanced cyclists. Length – 2850 m, average gradient 12.6%, grade 360 m.
  3. Route 3 – The Robbery is designed for intermediate and advanced cyclists. Length – 1512 m, average gradient 12.6% and a drop of 190 m.
  4. Route 4 – Otesanek designed for advanced cyclists. Length – 723 m, average gradient 16.6% and a drop of 120 m.
  5. Route 5 – Loop 1 designed for beginners. Length – 650 m and average gradient of 6%.

Detailed information about the project and GPS data of trails are available on Szczyrk Mountain Resort website. Bike rental for adults and children is available on site.

Enduro Trails in Bielsko-Biała

This is not the end of the attractions – supporters of thrilling bike rides can also check out the trails in the Cygański Forest in Bielsko-Biała. Located just 15 km from the Przystanek Góry, the Enduro Trails complex is another network of one-way cycling routes. The singletracks here will delight mountain bikers, with paths of varying difficulty:
– green for beginners,
– blue for intermediate riders,
– red for advanced riders,
– black for mountain biking experts,
– orange uphill route.

A detailed description of the routes, including their purpose, average gradient, type of surface, difficulty and required skills can be found on the Enduro Trails website.

Cycling half-term holidays – active rest in a saddle

A vacation in Szczyrk is a great idea for active leisure for everyone. Unforgettable moments will be spent here also by the youngest cyclists, for whom interesting half-colonies in a saddle are waiting. Experienced instructors from Szczyrk Bike Academy invite to various bicycle trainings (individual, group and weekend). The young Progress sports school also runs classes – children and teenagers at the beginning and more advanced levels will find something for themselves in its offer. Worth mentioning are also Enduroprinceska courses organized in Bielsko-Biała, during which little princesses (but not only) can learn riding techniques in a great atmosphere in the Enduro Trails complex.

co zabrać na wyprawę w góry

What to take on a trip to the mountains?

Pleasant temperatures, longer days, and availability of trails – summer hiking is a proven recipe for a successful vacation. However, no matter what time of year it is, every trip needs to be well prepared to ensure comfort and safety during the climb. Therefore, we suggest what to pack for a trip on the Beskid trails!

Appropriate clothing

In the mountains, there is a rule to wear several layers of clothing. This applies not only on cold winter days but also in the summer. Weather, which is good in the valleys, during the climbing or the passing of the day may change dynamically. It is worth being prepared for any eventuality. During the holiday season, clothing made of thermal-regulating synthetic fibres or merino wool reigns supreme on the trails – thin T-shirts wick moisture effectively, dry quickly and are odour resistant. In addition, many models feature UV protection and even cooling technology. Cotton shirts do not work at all as they create a “wet compress” on your back after an intensive effort. The choice of pants, especially as far as their length is concerned, is a matter of individual preference. Still, a good idea may turn out to be 2-in-1 pants with a removable leg. We will appreciate them, especially when a penetrating wind catches us on the summit. Fleece or softshell and a rain jacket packed in a backpack will also ensure preparation for a breakdown in the weather.

Comfortable shoes

Maximum comfort is essential while walking kilometres in the mountains, and trekking shoes can provide it. It would be good if they were equipped with a slightly higher upper and mountain sole, guaranteeing optimal cushioning and stability of your steps. Due to changeable weather conditions, waterproof models are the best choice. The size of shoes is also essential – too tight or too loose will make it especially difficult for us to go down from the mountains. An alternative for hot weather is also mountain sandals, which are suitable for less demanding trails. You should also choose good socks to go with your shoes. Instead of sweat-storing cotton, opt for merino wool reinforced with synthetic fibres, which will allow your feet to breathe.

Protection from the sun

Although it encourages day hikes in the mountains, summer weather means strong exposure to the sun, which on the trails will be even more severe than in the lowlands. A cap or a hat will protect us from harmful UV rays and be placed in our backpacks. It should be made of light and airy materials and equipped with a special mesh. An exciting alternative is multifunctional buff slings, which can be tied in many ways. With their help, we can also create a practical scarf, wristband or hairband. In addition, do not forget to take sunscreen with a high protection factor, which will protect against painful burns. Finally, sunglasses with a UV filter will protect our eyes.

Water supply

During intensive workouts, do not forget to regularly refill the water. It is essential, especially if you plan to hike in the heat. A reusable bottle, which you can fill up in a mountain chalet or with water from a mountain stream, will protect you from dehydration. Another convenient solution is a water bottle, which will provide us with freedom of drinking while walking. It might be good to take a thermos with you, but unlike in winter, we should pour the cooled beverage into it. This way, it will keep its low temperature for longer.

What to see in and around Szczyrk on holidays?

Szczyrk, as the ski capital of Poland, is a perfect destination also for those planning summer holidays. An important point on the map of the town itself is the promenade along the Żylica River, leading from the Town Hall through the square in the centre to Buczkowice. The route can be covered both on foot and by bike. Further exploration of the area is worthwhile at the complex of three ski jumps, located on the northern slope of Skalite Mountain. Wisła is also worth a visit, offering numerous attractions related to the figure of Adam Małysz and unforgettable rides on the Wisła Train. Finally, a visit to the Eliksir stud farm, where children can take a thrilling ride on a lunge, should not be missing from the family holiday plan.

Szczyrk for the active – what to do in the mountains in summer?

The well-known and popular health resort is, above all, a paradise for mountain hiking enthusiasts, with trails of varying difficulty awaiting you. We especially recommend Skrzyczne, towering over Szczyrk – 1257 m above sea level, a mountain belonging to the Crown of Polish Mountains. Access via the blue trail. We recommend a climb to Klimczok (117 m) and trips to the Salmopol Pass, Malinowska Skała and the Karkoszczonka Pass for the following days.

Żywieckie and Międzybrodzkie Lakes – where mountains meet water

The summer months are a perfect time to explore the Beskid trails. The surrounding water reservoirs will also provide some relief from the heat. There is no shortage of them! The closest to Szczyrk is Żywieckie Lake, located only 20 km east of Przystanek Góry. This charmingly situated man-made reservoir, whose waters reflect the Beskid peaks, attracts lovers of sailing, windsurfing and water skiing to Żywiec every year – the winds here are perfect for active leisure. Along the lake shores, you will also find bathing beaches for sunbathing enthusiasts. We recommend in particular the public beach in Żywiec itself as well as the beach in Zarzecz – remember, however, that bathing in the lake is strictly at your own risk.

Apart from Żywieckie Lake, the second reservoir created in 1937 on the Sola River is Międzybrodzkie Lake, located to the north. On its shores, there are numerous water equipment rentals – kayaks, pedal boats and SUP boards. Fishing fans will also be delighted with their stay, who will have a chance to catch such species as roach, bream, pikeperch or pike during their summer holidays. Recommended swimming pools can be found in Czernichów and Międzybrodzie Żywieckie.

Swimming pools or water frenzy in mountainous surroundings

A holiday in Szczyrk is an excellent opportunity to use the offer of the nearby swimming pools after a day on the trail and discovering the charms of the Beskid resort. The family stay will be made more pleasant by visiting the modern Start swimming pool complex with sports and recreation infrastructure, located in Bielsko-Biała. Guests can enjoy two swimming pools with slides and a complex of water and air massages. There is also a playground with a sandpit, a paddling pool for toddlers, a volleyball court and a climbing wall for youngsters and adults.

For summer holidaymakers in the Beskidy, we also recommend the first aquapark in the Żywiec region, Leśna in Żywiec, which offers an indoor recreational pool with water spouts and neck massage equipment, an indoor pool with water and air massage benches, an outdoor swimming pool, a slide and two saunas – a Finnish one and a steam one.

On the shores of the Międzybrodzkie Lake mentioned above, there is also the Relaks swimming pool, which, as its name suggests, invites visitors to take advantage of the relaxing properties of water heated to 25 degrees Celsius. There is a 50-metre swimming pool with a 20-metre slide and a 15-metre pool for children. There are also two beach volleyball courts.

The modernised swimming pool in Wisła is also worth mentioning, inviting amateurs of active leisure to swim in two pools, a shallow one and a sports one. A considerable dose of adrenaline will be provided by the country’s first water slide with a modern pendulum construction. In Szczyrk itself, however, we will find an indoor swimming pool with a jacuzzi and sauna, which will be perfect in bad weather.

It is an ideal place for an afternoon coffee with cake. In the evenings, we organise climatic bonfires with sausage roasting in the arbour. You can also borrow board games, chess and playing cards, which will make your afternoons more pleasant.
